Why is Jesse Metcalfe leaving? Chesapeake Shores in season 5 episode 2? There’s a chance you already knew he was leaving this season, but why now?
There are a few different things worth going into in this piece, but let’s start with timing: it makes sense to write out the Trace character early. We reportedly already have Metcalfe leaving the show of his own accord; this is something that was his choice and it was also a choice he made shortly before filming. The best choice the writers had was to accommodate that and find a way to work early in his departure. Stretching it would have extended the inevitable.
Aside from all this, there’s another reason the writers probably wanted to tie things up at this point: it gives them more freedom for the rest of the season! We’re sure they enjoyed telling new stories and moving things forward a bit – it’s basically a test for them to keep people watching. Losing a protagonist so early in the season is never ideal, but they’ve clearly already set up this story so that they can move forward and not have Abby in a place of complete destruction. That’s what made that time jump decision so smart, and we’re certainly excited to see more of what the writers choose to do from here. (Robert Buckley’s introduction is only part of the general equation.)
In the end, remember that Jesse had to make this decision, and the show tonight tried its best to come to a conclusion that felt appropriate. They also didn’t have much time to figure things out.
