The Walt Disney Company announced that a new in-park schedule, Disney Genie, will also debut later this fall. With the announcement came news that the free FastPass+ service, the added benefit of being able to skip the lines at some of the top attractions at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World, would now be a paid service through Disney Genie.
“Disney Genie listens to the preferences guests share with us to help design their best day and deliver an experience made just for them. Combining incredible technology with more than 60 years of expertise in how our guests visit the parks, Disney Genie will personalize their Disney day, allowing guests to spend less time planning and waiting and more time doing the things they want to do. love,” said Josh D’Amaro. , President, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products.
The Disney Genie integrates into the My Disney Experience app for Walt Disney World and the Disneyland app for Disneyland. The new scheduling tool that lets families visiting the theme parks know which attraction lines are the shortest, where mobile ordering is available, and a host of other algorithm-based suggestions throughout the day. Part of the new integration will include Disney Genie+, which is very similar to the former Maxpass program at the Disneyland Resort. With Disney Genie+, guests pay a flat fee per person, per day to access the recently renamed Fastpass lines (now Lightning Lanes) to some of Disney’s most popular attractions.
In addition to Disney Genie+, guests can purchase per person, per day access to two highly sought-after individual Lightning Lane attractions. These attractions include Seven Dwarfs Mine Train at Magic Kingdom in Orlando, Florida and Radiator Springs Racers at Disney California Adventure in Anaheim, California. In addition, visitors to both resorts can get their spot in line for attractions that utilize a virtual queue and boarding groups, such as Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance at both Disneyland Park and Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and the upcoming Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure at EPCOT. The guaranteed ride on attractions that use a virtual queue will cost an additional fee on top of Disney Genie+ per person, including per day, although guests can still try to get a boarding group for free the traditional way.
With the new service Walt Disney World resort guests can begin individual purchases of attractions in Lightnin Lane at 7:00 AM. This is at the same time as the group efforts begin for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance and soon Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure. Other attractions can be booked at 7:00 AM by anyone who has purchased Disney Genie+ for the day.
A good thing about the Disney Genie+ service is that all attraction reservations are made on the day, meaning there’s no need to book high-priority FastPass attractions 60 days prior to arrival at the theme parks. Disney Genie+ cannot be purchased prior to arrival at Disneyland or Walt Disney World unless a ticket is a date-based ticket. For all other tickets, including Annual Tickets and Magic Keys, guests can purchase Disney Genie+ in the accompanying park app on the day of their visit.
Details on which specific attractions will use the new service have not been disclosed for Disneyland and Walt Disney World, Disney said most attractions using FastPass will use the new Lightning Lane and Disney Genie+. Disney has not said whether people with annual passes, Magic Keys or Disney Vacation Club members will eventually be able to add Disney Genie+ to their annual pass for a flat fee like what was available with Disneyland’s MaxPass service.
The new system is sure to increase Disney’s profits as people want to make the most of their days at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland and no waiting in line for their favorite attractions. But Disney Genie+ is also a major financial investment for the company, as they must re-educate guests about new terminology through their online social platforms and websites, change the FastPass+ signage in the parks, and invest more money in both theme park apps to make sure the new features work for every guest, every time. As popular as MaxPass was at Disneyland, time will tell if the new service, with upfront fees and optional extras, will be something the majority of guests at both parks will use.
