Chicago Bears reach deal with former Philadelphia Eagles fanatic Jason Peters

The Chicago Bears have agreed with offensive tackle Jason Peters, with his agent, Vince Taylor, telling ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler that Peters will sign a one-year contract.

Bears coach Matt Nagy said Peters signed with Chicago to compete for the starting left tackle job. The Bears’ original choice to play left-tackle, rookie in the second round Bitches Jenkins, has been sidelined with a back injury since the start of training camp.

“It’s about familiarity with a man who has been playing in this league for a long time and has been very good,” Nagy said on Saturday. “We understand that he is older. There is a history with [Bears offensive line coach] Juan [Castillo]. Juan worked with him in Philadelphia several years ago. I was there in Philadelphia too.

“For us to bring him in, he knows there’s great competition. We’re trying to do everything we can to protect and play a great game. I think he’s coming here to compete for the starting left tackle open, man. It’s a competition.”

39-year-old Peters has spent the past 12 seasons of his stellar career with the Philadelphia Eagles, with whom he earned seven of his nine Pro Bowl bids.

Last season, he returned to the Eagles on a one-year deal to play guard, then returned to the left tackle with a honed contract when André Dillard suffered a torn biceps injury in August.

Peters played eight games in 2020 and was placed on injured reserve in December with a toe injury that required surgery. He has suffered multiple injuries in recent years and has played 44 out of a possible 64 games since 2017.

An undrafted free-agent pickup by the Buffalo Bills in 2004, Peters put together a resume worthy of the Hall of Fame during his 17 NFL seasons, which included two first-team All-Pro rosters.

Jeff Dickerson and Tim McManus of ESPN contributed to this report.
