That said, “The Blue Flu” is also incredibly funny. This is the best Boyle stuff we’ve gotten in a long time. Boyle, for example, calls mono “cousin’s disease” and doesn’t understand why Jake doesn’t like it when he says the couple “goes to town” together. When Boyle thinks he has testicular cancer, he starts spinning, buying expensive cheeses and wearing extravagant fur coats.
There’s also a great joke about the other districts sending their versions of Hitchcock and Scully to the Nine-Nine to make up for the lack of manpower. I have to say I’m very disappointed that Hitchcock looks like he’ll only be appearing through a video screen, but hopefully the season will still find a way to deliver creative material from Hitchcock and Scully.
However, just like last week, the second episode of the night leaves a lot to be desired. “Balancing” is a classic sitcom episode for new parents, filtered through the BK99 lens. Jake and Amy are each highly dedicated professionals with important matters on their plates. Jake tries to catch an old nemesis, serial killer Johnny Franzia (the bad guys always have the best names on this show), while Amy will make a proposal to reduce the number of officers based on the findings in the final episode. Each has yet to find time to be parents. This is exactly the kind of story I wasn’t looking forward to when it became known that Jake and Amy were going to be parents. While the show was incredibly inventive at telling pregnancy stories, the parenting stories have been cliche until now.
It’s kind of fun to watch Jake almost get tortured about Boyle living out his detective movie fantasies while having to hear them secondhand. Finally, Jake steps up to the parent and allows Amy to give her presentation, but is rewarded by seeing his son pull himself up for the first time.
The episode also finds Holt moving in with Rosa amid his relationship troubles with Kevin, and he talks about his husband nonstop, driving Rosa insane. When they get drunk to distract Holt’s mind from his relationship problems, he ends up sending Kevin a cock photo, and the pair attempt to delete the photo from Kevin’s devices. Rosa and Holt are a fun, unusual combination, but they don’t really get enough time to make it memorable.
